From nine strangers online to three festivals in three cities

CREATE PURPOSE unfolds as a journey — each step shaped by the hands and voices of the people who live there.

The journey

Four steps, one shared process

From a first online meeting between nine artists who have never worked together, to three festivals in three cities, each one shaped by the people who live there.

1
Phase 1

Building a shared language

Before any residency begins, the nine selected artists — three from Germany, three from Greece, three from Romania, working in music, design, and theatre and scenic movement — come together for a period of online training and team-building.

It starts with a two-day online team-building, designed simply to help nine strangers become a working team. From there, the artists move into a structured training on participatory and co-creation methods. By the end of this phase, every artist shares the same toolkit and the same understanding of what the residencies are meant to achieve, regardless of their discipline or home country.

Phase 2

Meeting the communities

In each host city, around 50 young people aged 15–30 are recruited and organised into three smaller groups. Before the artists ever set foot in the country, two blended preparatory meetings bring these groups together with local facilitators in person, and with the international artists online.

These early conversations matter. They introduce the NEB value at the heart of that residency, surface the community’s own experiences and concerns, and start building the trust that co-creation depends on — so that by the time the artists arrive, it isn’t nine strangers meeting fifty more, but a team that has already started talking.

The residencies

Each residency runs for three weeks, in one of the three partner cities. One artist from each country joins every youth sub-group, so each small team is already international and interdisciplinary before it creates a single thing.

Weeks 1–2

Co-creation

Four sessions per group, exploring the local NEB theme through community walks, discussion, movement, sound and visual work. This is where the artwork actually forms — not designed in advance and handed to participants, but built from their ideas, memories and everyday experience of the place they live in.

Week 3

Finalisation & festival

Everything created is brought together into one cross-disciplinary piece — part music, part movement, part visual design. The residency closes with a public festival, open to the whole community.

Young participants take part not as an audience, but as co-performers, collaborators on scenography or contributors to the soundscape — and the festival celebrates both the finished work and the process that made it.

Phase 4

What stays behind

Every residency leaves something behind — so that what nine artists and three communities learn here doesn’t stay local, or temporary.
